Boulder City’s Unofficial 4th of July “Protest”

On July 4th, 2020, some citizens of Boulder City, disgruntled with the city’s decision to cancel Fourth of July festivities, gathered at Broadbent Park for a parade, or “protest,” according to the event’s fliers.

The event was politically charged, with many Trump 2020 flags and other political memorabilia. Very few attendees followed Nevada’s public mask mandate.

The parade was made up of about 100 cars, and well over 100 participants and parade viewers. I saw approximately 20 people correctly wearing face coverings.

Governor Sisolak issued a mandatory face mask policy in late June for all of Nevada. This state is one of a handful experiencing record breaking numbers of COVID-19 cases following reopening.

“Join us in celebrating our nation's independence from a tyrannical government!”

The event was organized via Facebook, asking participants to “bring your classic ride, boat, motorcycle or float.”

Boulder City had previously cancelled the annual July 4th festivities to account for new COVID-19 risks.
